Liberals Fear New Tax Law Not a Negative For Republicans

Crain's New York Business reports:
President Donald Trump’s approval rating has jumped from 36% in December to 41% earlier this month, according to a tracker on the data journalism site fivethirtyeight.com that combines all the polls on the subject. The generic congressional ballot, which asks likely voters whether they prefer Democrats or Republicans in the upcoming midterms, puts the Democratic lead at six or seven points, down from double digits at the end of last year. The growing realization that Democrats’ rhetoric about the tax bill being an assault on the middle class is not the whole truth must be a factor.

Even Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s standing in the polls dropped sharply, though insiders are divided on how much that is attributable to his hopelessly exaggerated attacks on the tax bill. (There is also a corruption trial underway involving a former top aide to the governor.)

Republicans clearly understand this, and the smartest ones are determined to feature the bill in their campaigns, noted a very interesting New York Times story this month, even in blue states like ours. The president’s tweets are a big problem for the GOP, but the polls show that while Americans are skeptical that the tax reform will benefit them, they are open to being convinced. Whoever wins that argument may win the 2018 elections.
Imagine that.
